It was customary during the 1800's for women to exchange buttons from their garments with lovedones who would then sew the souvenir onto a wide, black elastic band. An extravagant bracelet indicated a wellloved woman. Velvet buttons were saturated with fragrance, and often sewn into a soldier's sleeve.
